Concordia University seeks applicants for a full-time faculty position as Chair of the Family Life Department beginning in the 2017-2018 academic year.  This position is in the School of Education located on the Ann Arbor, MI campus and reports to the Campus Dean of Education.

Primary responsibilities will include the coordination, administration, and assessment of the Family Life academic department, including oversight of its three programmatic emphases: church work, hospital child life specialist, and community services. As a full-time faculty member, this individual will also serve on an interdepartmental faculty committee, conduct academic scholarship, and provide dedicated service to the university and broader communities. 

There are several specific duties of which to be aware:

  • Teach the equivalent of six 3-credit courses per academic year
  • Supervise full-time and adjunct faculty in the program
  • Recruit and recommend adjunct instructors to the Campus Dean
  • Oversee and supervise practicums, internships and portfolios
  • Develop class schedules for the undergraduate academic program
  • Develop and monitor curriculum, update syllabi and textbook lists
  • Monitor state and national guidelines and requirements for the program, including specifically program approval status through the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR)
  • Serve as the academic advisor to students in the church work track of the undergraduate program
  • Collaborate with staff and the coordinators in the Concordia University Ann Arbor School of Education

Education and Experience

This position requires commissioned or ordained minister of religion status in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), a graduate degree in family life education, a certification in family life education (CLFE) or willingness to qualify for this certification, and an earned doctorate or the willingness to obtain a doctorate. There will be strong preference for a doctorate in Family Health Sciences, Social Science or Psychology as well as a direct knowledge, experience or certification as a Child Life Specialist and/or social services provider.  Prior higher education experience is desirable. Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, faculty, exempt position.  Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience.  Concordia health, disability, and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time employees and eligible dependents.  Tuition benefits are also available for employees and their qualified dependents.
