Position Description

The Department of Physical Sciences at Concordia University Wisconsin seeks to hire a postdoctoral researcher to participate in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) experiment, with a focus on the production of calibrated data and subtraction of technical noise from the calibrated data. This position requires a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy and experience in computational methods. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2021, and duration of the appointment is three years.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for developing and operating the pipeline that produces calibrated gravitational-wave data for astrophysical analyses, with the goal of improving accuracy, lowering latency, and streamlining the calibration procedure to help produce a robust, reliable gravitational-wave detection machine. This position will also be responsible for developing and improving methods of subtracting broadband noise from the data in low latency, as well as working with others in the group to pioneer methods to produce calibration error estimates in low latency. Additionally, this position offers opportunities to teach as a guest lecturer in the physical sciences department courses at Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as to collaborate with other LIGO researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.


Education and Experience

A qualified candidate will possess a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy, as well as experience in using computational methods to solve research problems. A candidate with research experience in gravitational-wave physics or astronomy who is familiar with the LIGO experiment is preferred.
